Summary
Although exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) for the first six months after delivery provides unparalleled health benefits, rates of EBF in Kenya remain low: only 42% of babies are EBF by 5 months. There is evidence that training healthcare providers to support women in breastfeeding improves rates of EBF. In addition, the innovative use of mobile technology to send information and support to breastfeeding women has been shown to improve rates of EBF for the first six months. We will evaluate training providers at five government hospitals and sending supportive messages about breastfeeding to women after delivery on rates of EBF over six months after delivery.
